About Old Irontown

Old Irontown — also known as Old Iron Town or simply Irontown, and originally called Iron City — is a near-ghost town tucked within Dixie National Forest in Iron County, Utah, roughly 22 miles from Cedar City. It began as a settlement in 1868, founded as a second effort to extract iron from Iron Mountain after earlier operations out of Cedar City produced disappointing results. The colony functioned for only about eight years before economic pressure from the Panic of 1873 and complications stemming from the Edmunds–Tucker Act forced it to shut down by 1876.

For visitors today, the site offers a glimpse into a short-lived but historically distinct chapter of Utah's iron-mining past. The forest setting and remnants of the settlement make it a rewarding destination for history-minded travelers and photographers willing to make the drive out from Cedar City.
