About New Idria
New Idria is a ghost town in San Benito County, California, its existence tied directly to the New Idria Mercury Mine. When the mine shut down in 1972, the community that had grown around it was effectively abandoned, leaving behind the hollow remnants of a once-active settlement.
Visitors today find a quiet, weathered site where the physical traces of former occupation remain in various states of decay. The setting reflects decades of dormancy following the mine's closure, and the area carries the atmosphere typical of California's more remote abandoned communities.
