About Nevada City

Nevada City is a ghost town in Madison County, Montana, with roots in one of the most significant gold strikes the Rocky Mountain West ever saw. During the 1860s it functioned as one of two commercial hubs in the region, paired closely with neighboring Virginia City as the area drew prospectors and settlers seeking their fortunes. When the gold ran out and the population drifted away, the community faded steadily into abandonment.

Since the late 1950s, Nevada City has been reinvented as a tourist destination, drawing visitors with an authentic collection of nineteenth-century buildings preserved within and around the site. Walking among these structures offers a tangible sense of what frontier commercial life looked like at the height of the gold era.

The site is accessible by passenger car, making it a straightforward stop for most travelers. Summer and early fall offer the most comfortable and reliable visiting conditions, while winter months bring the kind of harsh weather typical of a Montana mountain valley that can make travel difficult.
