Mormon Island

Mormon Island was a Gold Rush-era mining town that grew up along the American River, populated largely by Mormon immigrants drawn to California by the promise of gold. The community once bustled with the activity typical of a California mining settlement of that period.

Today, the town no longer exists above ground. Its entire site lies beneath the waters of Folsom Lake in Sacramento County, permanently submerged. Visitors come not to walk the streets of a ruined townsite but to know that somewhere below the lake's surface, the remains of this community rest. During periods of significant drought, when lake levels drop substantially, remnants may become partially visible, making it a site of quiet historical curiosity rather than a conventional ghost town experience.

For those drawn to the history, the Folsom Lake area offers access to the water and surrounding shoreline. Expect a scenic reservoir setting with boating, photography, and sightseeing opportunities rather than any preserved ruins or interpretive markers specific to Mormon Island.
