Mormon Bar

Tucked into the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada along Mariposa Creek, Mormon Bar is a former Gold Rush mining camp that once drew prospectors to Mariposa County during California's mid-19th-century boom years. The site sits at roughly 1,772 feet in elevation, about two miles south-southeast of the town of Mariposa, and retains its character as an unincorporated community rather than a fully abandoned townsite.

Today the area is quiet and largely undeveloped. Visitors traveling State Route 49 pass close by, making it an easy detour, but there are no formal attractions or preserved structures to anchor a dedicated trip. The appeal is primarily historical atmosphere and the scenic creek-side setting rather than any standing remains.

Access is straightforward given the proximity to State Route 49 and the town of Mariposa. The relatively modest elevation means the site is reachable through most of the year, though winter months can bring wet and occasionally hazardous road conditions in the foothills.
