Mogollon

Tucked at the base of Silver Creek Canyon in Catron County, New Mexico, Mogollon — officially the Mogollon Historic District — began as a support settlement for the gold mines scattered through the surrounding Mogollon Mountains. The town took shape in the 1880s, and by the 1890s its population swelled to somewhere between 3,000 and 6,000 transient miners at its peak. The 'Little Fannie' mine stood as the town's primary economic engine during that era.

Today Mogollon is a ghost town, reachable by passenger car from nearby Glenwood and Alma to the west. Visitors come to walk through what remains of this once-busy canyon community, photograph weathered structures, and take in the dramatic canyon setting. The site rewards history-minded travelers and photographers, though expectations should be calibrated to a genuine ghost town rather than a developed attraction.
