McMillenville

A former community tucked into Gila County, Arizona, McMillenville owes its existence to a lucky strike in 1876, when Theodore H. Harris and Charles McMillen stumbled upon silver ore deposits. The town that grew up around those deposits carried several spellings over the years — McMillianville and McMillanville among them — before eventually fading from the map entirely.

Today McMillenville is a ghost town, and visitors should arrive with modest expectations. Little infrastructure remains, and the site rewards those with an interest in Arizona's mining-era past rather than those seeking developed amenities or marked trails.

Access to remote Gila County sites like this can be rough, and conditions vary considerably by season. Spring and fall generally offer the most comfortable weather for exploration, while summer heat in this part of Arizona can be intense and winter roads unpredictable. Come prepared with water, a high-clearance vehicle if roads are involved, and the awareness that no services exist on-site.
