Manhattan

Manhattan is a ghost town in Larimer County, Colorado, sitting at 8,474 feet elevation about 4 miles north of Rustic. Gold was discovered in the area in September 1886, drawing settlers and transforming the site into a mining town. The ore proved difficult to extract and yields were modest, so the population had largely faded by 1900.

The United States Forest Service eventually took over the land, and by 1933 the last standing structures had been dismantled. Visitors today will find no intact buildings — the physical record of the town has been erased. What remains is the setting itself and the historical knowledge of what once stood there.
