About Liberty Grove

Liberty Grove is a ghost town in Delta County, Texas, whose roots stretch back to at least 1854, when a school opened to serve the surrounding farming community. By 1936, that school and a cemetery remained as the settlement's anchor institutions, and as late as 1966 roughly 25 people still called the area home.

The community's end came in stages. The cemetery was relocated in 1989, and not long after, the remaining settlement was abandoned and submerged beneath Cooper Lake. Nothing of the original townsite remains accessible to visitors today. The most tangible connection to Liberty Grove's past is a campsite within Cooper State Park that carries the community's name — making that campground the practical destination for anyone drawn by the history.
