Kentucky Camp

Tucked within Coronado National Forest in Pima County, Arizona, Kentucky Camp is a former mining camp that has since become a ghost town drawing history-minded visitors. Its surviving structures are part of the Kentucky Camp Historic District, which earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Because the site falls under national forest land, the U.S. Forest Service maintains the remaining buildings.

The camp sits along the Arizona Trail, giving hikers and backpackers a tangible piece of history to encounter mid-route. The community of Sonoita lies nearby. Visitors today can explore the preserved remnants of the historic district in a setting managed for long-term protection rather than development.

Access is tied to the area's forest roads and trail corridors. As with much of southern Arizona, spring and fall tend to offer the most comfortable conditions, while summer monsoon season brings heat and afternoon storms and winter can introduce cold and rough road surfaces.
