Jawbone Flats

Jawbone Flats is a ghost town in Marion County, Oregon, sitting along Opal Creek roughly 22 miles from Salem, the state capital. Gold was first discovered in the area in 1859, and the camp itself was established in 1931, growing out of the mining activity that drew prospectors to the region.

Visitors reach the site by way of the Opal Pool Loop trail, making it a destination you hike into rather than drive up to. What remains is a historic mining settlement set within the scenic Opal Creek corridor, offering a look at Oregon's early resource-extraction past alongside the natural beauty of the creek environment.

Because access depends on a trail, conditions matter. Summer and early fall are the most reliable months to visit, while winter and early spring can make the approach difficult or impassable.
