Hector Mine

Tucked into the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, California, Hector Mine is a former mining operation that left its mark well beyond its own history. The mineral hectorite was named for an occurrence found in this area, and the significant 1999 earthquake whose epicenter fell near the site took its name from the mine as well.

About four miles north of the mine itself, a small railroad camp and complex once served the operation. That settlement, known as Hector, survives today as a tiny hamlet, and both it and the nearby Hector Road carry the mine's name forward.

Visitors today find a sparse, remote desert setting characteristic of the Mojave. The site holds historical curiosity value — particularly for those interested in its geological legacy — but facilities and developed access are minimal. The desert heat makes cooler months far more practical for a visit, and travelers should come self-sufficient with water and navigation tools.
