About Gas Point
Gas Point is a ghost town in Shasta County, California, situated along Cottonwood Creek. The community went by at least two other names over its lifetime — Pinckney and Janesville — before fading from the map. Its origins trace to 1849, when gold discovered at Reading's Bar drew prospectors to the area during the California Gold Rush, and a mining settlement took root.
Today it exists as a ghost town, and visitors should expect little in the way of preserved structures or formal amenities. The surrounding Cottonwood Creek setting provides the main draw for those making the trip out of historical curiosity.
