Gantts Quarry

Gantts Quarry is a ghost town in Talladega County, Alabama, with a history rooted more in municipal politics than population growth. The town was incorporated in 1910 not out of civic ambition but as a defensive measure to prevent annexation by the neighboring city of Sylacauga. That protective purpose ultimately outlasted the community itself — by the late 1990s only a handful of residents remained, and after the population fell to zero the town was officially disincorporated, effective December 31, 2001.

Today Gantts Quarry registers zero residents, a figure confirmed by three consecutive federal censuses in 2000, 2010, and 2020. Visitors should expect little in the way of preserved structures or organized access — this is a quietly vanished community rather than a maintained historic site. It suits those drawn to the understated reality of places that once existed on a map and no longer do.
