Eureka

Tucked along the Animas River in northeastern San Juan County, Colorado, Eureka was a mining town that once sat between the communities of Silverton and Animas Forks. Its name draws from the Greek exclamation of discovery, a fitting choice for a place born from the pursuit of extractable wealth. A post office served the town for nearly seven decades, opening in August 1875 and closing in April 1942, offering a rough marker for the arc of its active life.

Today Eureka is a ghost town. Visitors drawn to the site will find remnants of that era set against the dramatic river corridor, though the community itself is long gone. The surrounding San Juan County landscape makes the drive out worthwhile for those interested in Colorado mining history and scenic mountain scenery.
