About Cote Sans Dessein
Cote Sans Dessein is a ghost town in southern Callaway County, Missouri, occupying land on the Missouri River floodplain. Situated across the river from Bonnots Mill in Osage County, the settlement belonged to a township that still carries its name today, even as the town itself has ceased to exist.
The town's story is one of persistence against repeated flood destruction along the Missouri River. Despite enduring cycle after cycle of inundation, the community held on until the accumulated losses finally proved too much, and residents largely dispersed, leaving the site effectively abandoned.
Visitors today will find little in the way of physical remains — this is a floodplain location shaped more by water and time than by preservation. The setting along the Missouri River can reward those interested in history and photography, but expectations should be modest. Access and conditions are tied closely to river levels, and flooding remains a real concern at any time of year.
