Coal City

Coal City is a ghost town in Carbon County, Utah, founded in 1885 as a farming community. When coal was discovered in the area, small-scale mining gradually took over as the town's primary activity. Its location a mile or two removed from the larger operations at National and Consumers was once seen as an advantage, with residents expected to enjoy less workplace pressure than those closer to the bigger mines. By 1935, however, coal production had fallen sharply, and the town faded — eventually down to just two occupied residences.

Visitors today will find little more than a quiet, historically layered landscape in rural Carbon County. It suits those interested in Utah's coal-era past and the atmosphere of a place that once hummed with modest industry before being reclaimed by time.
