About Civil Bend

Civil Bend was a small village founded in 1850 in the western portion of Benton Township, Fremont County, Iowa, situated near the Missouri River close to what is now the town of Percival. Its historical significance runs well beyond its modest size: the settlement served as a documented station on the Underground Railroad and a stop along the Lane Trail, making it a meaningful site in the story of American freedom movements.

Today Civil Bend is a ghost town, and visitors should expect little in the way of standing structures or formal infrastructure. The draw here is historical imagination and context rather than preserved buildings. The flat Missouri River bottomland setting provides the backdrop for reflecting on the community's outsized role in sheltering freedom seekers heading north.
