About Cheniere Caminada

Cheniere Caminada was once a fishing community situated in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, just west of Grand Isle. Its story came to a tragic end when an unnamed hurricane struck in 1893 — a storm now known as the Cheniere Caminada hurricane and regarded as one of the deadliest to ever hit the United States. The same storm came close to wiping out Grand Isle as well.

Today Cheniere Caminada is a ghost town, and visitors will find little in the way of standing structures or preserved remains. The draw here is largely historical and atmospheric — the coastal Louisiana setting carries the weight of the community's fate, and the site holds real significance for those interested in the history of devastating American hurricanes.
