Carpenter Creek

Carpenter Creek is a ghost town in Musselshell County, Montana, best known today as the former site of a large coal mine and as the birthplace of J. R. "Doc" Campbell, who went on to serve as the 82nd Associate Justice of the Oregon Supreme Court.

The town had a brief institutional footprint: a Post Office operated here from 1915 to 1918, with John Donovan serving as postmaster. That three-year window offers a sense of how short-lived the settlement's active period was.

Visitors today will find little more than open Montana landscape. With the mine long gone and no active community remaining, Carpenter Creek is the kind of quiet, unmarked ghost town that rewards historically curious travelers rather than those seeking developed attractions. Access and road conditions in rural Musselshell County can be challenging, particularly outside the summer and early fall months.
