About Carbon

Roughly 9.5 miles west-southwest of Medicine Bow, Wyoming, Carbon is a ghost town whose economic roots lay in coal. Today the site sits quietly in Carbon County, leaving little behind for the casual passerby.

The most tangible reason to make the trip is the Carbon Cemetery, a historically significant burial ground listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For visitors drawn to frontier history and the traces communities leave behind, the cemetery offers a genuine, if understated, connection to the town's past.

Access to the area is straightforward given its proximity to Medicine Bow, but facilities are nonexistent — this is open Wyoming countryside, not a developed attraction. Come prepared for variable high-plains weather, and plan your visit between late spring and early fall when roads and conditions are most reliable.
