Bonanza City

Bonanza City is a ghost town in Santa Fe County, New Mexico, situated about 13 miles southwest of Santa Fe. Its roots trace to 1880, when a mining boom tied to gold and silver discoveries in the nearby Cerrillos Hills drew settlers and shaped it into a working mining community. By the early 1900s, the town had been abandoned.

Visitors today won't find a preserved townsite so much as a layered landscape. Later in the 20th century, Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch was established close to the ruins, featuring a film set designed to evoke a late 19th-century mining town. That movie ranch is now the most tangible attraction in the area, offering a sense of the era even as the original ruins remain largely in the background.

Access is straightforward given the proximity to Santa Fe, making this a feasible day trip. Photography and sightseeing are the practical draws here — there's genuine history on the ground, but visitors should come with modest expectations about surviving original structures.
