About Birchville
Birchville, also known as Smith Ranch, is a ghost town in present-day Hudspeth County, Texas. In its active years, it served first as a settlement along the historic San Antonio-El Paso Road and later as a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. According to the 1857 Texas Almanac's distance table for the San Antonio-San Diego Mail Line, the site sat roughly 35 miles northwest of the First Camp on Rio Grande and about 24.8 miles southeast of San Elizario.
Visitors today will find little infrastructure or documentation to guide a trip here. The site reflects the sparse, remote character of far west Texas, and any physical remains are likely minimal. Access is best attempted in the cooler months, as the region's summer heat can be punishing and potentially hazardous.
