Bethel

Bethel is a ghost town in Polk County, Oregon, tucked at the base of the Eola Hills in Plum Valley. Of the community that once existed here, only a single structure survives — a former school building that now functions as a church.

The settlement's name carries an interesting backstory. The Reverend Glen O. Burnett, who arrived in the area after traveling the Oregon Trail with his family, chose the name Bethel after a Church of Christ congregation he had previously led in Missouri. The word itself comes from Hebrew and translates roughly as 'house of god,' which explains why it appears so frequently as a place name tied to religious communities across the country.

For visitors, Bethel offers little in the way of dramatic ruins or infrastructure. The converted schoolhouse is the sole physical remnant, and the surrounding valley setting provides the main visual appeal. It suits those with an interest in Oregon Trail history or early Willamette Valley settlement more than those seeking an extensive site to explore.
