About Bearmouth
Bearmouth is a ghost town in Granite County, Montana, situated along the Clark Fork River. Rather than a mining camp itself, it served as a commercial hub — a trading post supplying the placer mining camps of Beartown, Garnet, and Coloma, which operated in the hills to the north. The Lannen family, an early pioneer household, ran both a gold exchange and a ferry crossing over the Clark Fork at this location.
Visitors today encounter a historically modest site whose significance lies more in its supporting role to surrounding mining activity than in dramatic ruins. The Clark Fork River setting provides scenic context, and the area's connection to multiple nearby mining communities makes it a point of interest for history-minded travelers exploring Granite County.
