About Atchafalaya
Atchafalaya is an abandoned ghost town in St. Martin Parish, Louisiana, situated on the west bank of the Atchafalaya River just north of Interstate 10, roughly six miles north of Butte La Rose. Historical USGS maps from 1935 document the town at the Southern Pacific Railroad crossing, a rail line constructed in 1908, giving a sense of when the community had its moment of activity.
Today the site is fully abandoned. Visitors will find little more than a river setting tied to that old railroad corridor. The coordinates place you in a low-lying Louisiana landscape, and the reality of a visit is one of atmosphere and history rather than preserved structures or formal amenities.
