Anita

Tucked into Coconino County, Arizona, Anita is a ghost town with roots in the late nineteenth century. The settlement grew up along the Grand Canyon Railway as a mining community and earned its name in 1897 from the daughter of one of the railroad's surveyors.

Little documentation survives about what physical remnants greet visitors today, so expectations should be modest. The site's main draw is its historical footnote — a quiet, out-of-the-way place where the early days of Arizona railroad development and mining briefly left their mark on the landscape.
