Alto

Alto is a ghost town in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, situated high on a steep mountainside in the Santa Rita Mountains east of Tubac. Its roots trace to the early 1900s, when the area fell within the Tyndall Mining District and drew settlers to work the mines perched on the rugged terrain above.

The town carried two names over its lifetime. Settlers first called it El Plomo — Spanish for "lead" — a nod to what the mines were producing. Years later the name was changed to Alto, Spanish for "high," likely a reference to the dramatic elevation at which the mines and community sat.

Visitors today will find little more than the remote mountain setting itself. Access to a site this steep and sparsely documented demands realistic expectations: this is backcountry Arizona, best approached with a high-clearance vehicle and an awareness that no formal facilities or maintained paths are guaranteed. Spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the area.
