About Weminuche Wilderness
The Weminuche Wilderness, Colorado's largest wilderness area at over 500,000 acres, sprawls across the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado with dramatic alpine terrain, pristine backcountry lakes, and rugged peaks exceeding 14,000 feet. This vast protected landscape encompasses diverse ecosystems from subalpine forests to tundra, offering backpackers and hikers genuine solitude and technical mountaineering opportunities. The wilderness is traversed by the iconic Continental Divide Trail and numerous high-altitude routes connecting remote passes and cirque basins, with classic destinations including the Grenadier Range, Rio Grande Pyramid, and numerous turquoise alpine lakes. Access is primarily from the Durango and Pagosa Springs areas, with trail conditions varying significantly by elevation and aspect, requiring careful route planning and self-sufficiency in one of Colorado's most remote and unforgiving mountain environments.
