About Tabeguache Wilderness Area
Tabeguache Wilderness Area encompasses 8,066 acres of pristine high-country terrain in Colorado's Uncompahgre National Forest region, offering solitude seekers and backcountry adventurers a genuine wilderness experience. The area features rugged alpine meadows, aspen and conifer forests, and access to stunning views of the surrounding San Juan Mountains. Elevations range from approximately 9,000 to 13,000 feet, providing diverse ecosystems and opportunities for extended backpacking trips through remote, trail-managed landscape. This federally protected wilderness requires visitors to embrace Leave No Trace principles strictly—pack out all waste, camp in designated areas away from water sources, and respect the fragile alpine ecosystem.
