About Spanish Peaks Wilderness
Spanish Peaks Wilderness encompasses nearly 20,000 acres of rugged high country in southern Colorado, dominated by the striking twin summits of the Spanish Peaks—West Peak at 13,626 feet and East Peak at 12,997 feet. These dramatic volcanic formations create a distinctive landscape visible for miles across the surrounding plains and serve as the centerpiece of a wilderness offering genuine solitude and challenging terrain. The area features steep ridgelines, pristine alpine meadows, and cascading creeks that support healthy populations of elk and mule deer. Hikers and backpackers access this remote terrain via several primitive trailheads that climb through mixed conifer forests before breaking into expansive tundra and talus fields.
