About South San Juan Wilderness
The South San Juan Wilderness encompasses 161,011 acres of rugged high country straddling the Colorado-New Mexico border, featuring dramatic volcanic peaks, alpine basins, and pristine subalpine meadows. This remote backcountry offers solitude and technical terrain for experienced backpackers, with elevations ranging from 8,000 to over 13,000 feet across a landscape carved by glaciation and volcanic activity. The wilderness protects critical watershed areas feeding both the San Juan River drainage and Rio Grande basin, supporting diverse wildlife including elk, mule deer, and black bears. Hikers should expect challenging navigation in places, as this is true primitive wilderness with minimal trail maintenance and limited water sources at higher elevations.
