About Rocky Mountain National Park Wilderness Area
Rocky Mountain National Park's Wilderness Area encompasses nearly a quarter-million acres of pristine high-country terrain spanning the Continental Divide in north-central Colorado. This vast protected backcountry features dramatic alpine peaks exceeding 12,000 feet, crystalline mountain lakes, and verdant subalpine forests that transition to tundra ecosystems above timberline. The wilderness offers exceptional solitude and primitive recreation opportunities with over 300 miles of maintained trails ranging from gentle valley walks to strenuous ridge traverses. Visitors encounter diverse wildlife including elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, and marmots while navigating a landscape carved by ancient glaciers and shaped by the forces that created the Rocky Mountains themselves.
