About Powderhorn Wilderness
Powderhorn Wilderness encompasses 14,746 acres of pristine high-country terrain in Colorado's Gunnison National Forest, offering backpackers and hikers a remote alpine experience far from crowds. The area features dramatic peaks, cirque lakes, and expansive meadows characteristic of the West Elk Mountains, with elevations ranging from 9,000 to over 12,000 feet. Access is primarily via the Powderhorn Trail system, which winds through subalpine forests before opening onto windswept ridges and tundra-like plateaus. This is true wilderness—expect minimal trail infrastructure, unmarked routes in places, and the solitude that comes with Colorado's less-visited alpine zones. Weather changes rapidly at elevation, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer months.
