About Mount Evans Wilderness
Mount Evans Wilderness encompasses 73,418 acres of pristine high-alpine terrain in central Colorado, featuring some of the state's most dramatic peak scenery and remote backcountry. The wilderness protects the upper reaches of multiple drainages, with elevations ranging from approximately 9,000 feet to over 14,000 feet, offering alpine tundra, subalpine forest, and crystalline mountain lakes. Access is primarily via established trail systems that lead into the wilderness from multiple trailheads, with popular routes including approaches to Mount Evans, Mount Cameron, and the scenic high-altitude basins dotted with alpine lakes. This is genuine wilderness—visitors should expect minimal development, unmarked or faint trails in some areas, and the full responsibility of self-rescue and Leave No Trace principles.
