About Lizard Head Wilderness
Lizard Head Wilderness encompasses 41,587 acres of pristine high-country terrain in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, centered around the distinctive 13,113-foot Lizard Head Peak. This remote alpine wilderness features jagged peaks, cirque basins, and pristine meadows accessible primarily from the north and east via trails originating near Telluride and Rico. The terrain ranges from subalpine forest to exposed alpine tundra above 12,000 feet, offering exceptional solitude and challenging cross-country travel for experienced wilderness users. The area is characterized by steep slopes, loose scree fields, and dramatic granite formations that demand technical scrambling skills and careful route-finding. Water sources are abundant in early season but can be scarce by late summer, requiring careful planning. Leave No Trace is essential given the area's fragile alpine environment and the wilderness designation prohibiting mechanized travel.
