About Holy Cross Wilderness
Holy Cross Wilderness encompasses 122,946 acres of pristine high-altitude terrain in central Colorado, centered around the iconic Mount of the Holy Cross and its distinctive snow-filled couloir visible from great distances. The wilderness features dramatic peaks exceeding 14,000 feet, alpine lakes, subalpine meadows, and a network of backcountry trails that offer true solitude for experienced wilderness users. Expect rugged granite peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, and expansive vistas across the Sawatch Range. The terrain demands solid navigation skills and preparation for rapidly changing weather; afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer months, and exposed ridges present serious lightning hazard.
This wilderness requires a deep commitment to Leave No Trace principles given its fragile alpine ecosystem. Water sources are abundant but require filtration, and campsites must be established on durable surfaces well away from water and trails. The high elevation (many trails exceed 11,000 feet) and significant elevation gains make this suitable primarily for experienced backpackers and mountaineers comfortable with route-finding and self-rescue. Wildlife including bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, and marmots inhabits the area; maintain distances and pack out all trash. Winter access is limited to skilled backcountry skiers and mountaineers with avalanche safety knowledge.
