About Eagles Nest Wilderness
Eagles Nest Wilderness encompasses 135,205 acres of pristine high-country terrain in the White River National Forest near Vail, Colorado. This remote alpine sanctuary features dramatic peaks, crystalline mountain lakes, and expansive subalpine meadows, with elevations ranging from 8,000 to over 13,000 feet. The wilderness is characterized by steep granite formations, cirque basins, and cascading waterways that create an exceptional backcountry experience for those seeking solitude and untracked terrain.
The area offers diverse hiking and backpacking opportunities across multiple trail systems, including access to pristine alpine lakes such as Eaglesmere and Mirror Lake. Visitors encounter varying terrain from forested valleys to exposed ridgelines, with numerous peaks offering panoramic views of the Gore Range and surrounding mountains. The wilderness maintains a true primitive experience with minimal development and limited trail maintenance, requiring navigation skills and self-sufficiency from recreationalists.
Leave No Trace practices are essential due to the fragile alpine and subalpine ecosystems. Camp only at designated sites where evident, pack out all waste, use established trails to minimize impact, and respect wildlife from a distance. Weather conditions change rapidly above treeline—afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer, and exposure is a serious hazard. Water sources are generally reliable but should be treated before consumption.
