The Shortcut That Wasn't.
Two hikers asked a chatbot for a faster way to the Valley of the Five Lakes. It sent them onto a traverse they could neither finish nor reverse.
What happened in the Tatras
On 4 July 2026, two Lithuanian tourists were hiking in the Polish Tatras, heading for the Valley of the Five Lakes. Wanting to get there faster, they asked an AI chatbot for a shorter way.
The route it gave them took them up toward Niebieska Turnia and onto the Świnicka Ławka traverse — ground that calls for climbing experience neither of them had. They reached a point where they could go neither forward nor back, and called for help.
Poland's Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue service (TOPR) described the chatbot as having pointed them at “a route they were ultimately unable to complete on their own.” The pair were evacuated by helicopter.
It was a busy stretch for the service: TOPR assisted 55 people during the first week of July, and 4 July was its busiest single day, with 25 people helped. These two were a small part of that — which is rather the point. Nobody plans to become a statistic on a Saturday.
A route they were ultimately unable to complete on their own.
A note on what's confirmed
LRT's report, which is closest to TOPR's own account, does not name which AI tool the pair used. Cybernews, Digital Trends and SnowBrains all report it as ChatGPT. We've kept those two things separate here rather than blur them, because the distinction between “what the rescue service said” and “what the tech press reported” is exactly the kind of provenance this page is arguing for.
What a chatbot can't know about a shortcut
“Shorter” is a question about distance. Whether you can get down the shorter way is a question about rock, weather and your own party — and those are different questions.
Whether a Line Is Actually Walkable
A shorter distance on a map is not a shorter route on a mountain. The difference between a trail and a traverse that needs climbing experience is a fact about rock and exposure, not about mileage — and it isn't reliably encoded in anything a chatbot read.
What Grade the Terrain Is
European routes carry difficulty gradings, and Polish Tatra trails carry chain-and-ladder sections that are ordinary for one party and unthinkable for another. A tool that answers in prose rarely surfaces the grade at all, and never asks whether you can climb it.
Whether You Can Reverse It
The specific trap here is committing to ground you can't climb back down. That is a judgment about your own party on that day, which is exactly the thing a general assistant has no way to assess and no reason to raise.
What the Rock Is Doing Today
Wet limestone, verglas in a shaded couloir, or fresh snow on a traverse can turn a scramble into a rescue. Those conditions are published locally, change daily, and are invisible to a model answering from what it read months ago.
Why “faster” is the dangerous question
Ask a general assistant for a shortcut and the shape of a satisfying answer is a shortcut. Nothing in that exchange rewards the reply that actually helps — “the direct line exists, it's a graded traverse, and you should not be on it unless you climb.”
Mountain routes are not ranked by length. They are ranked by commitment: how hard it is to retreat once you're on them. That ranking exists, is published, and is well understood by the people who maintain those trails. It just isn't what a chatbot optimises for when you ask it to save you an hour.
The practical version of this: before you take any shortcut, find out its grade and whether you can reverse it. If you can't answer both, it isn't a shortcut, it's an unplanned route.

- Carry a way to call for help that doesn't depend on cell coverage
