The Lost Horse Mine trail is a 4-mile (round trip) out-and-back hike with 550 feet of elevation gain. Lost Horse Mine operated from 1893 to 1936, producing over 9,000 ounces of gold. It was one of the most successful mines in the Joshua Tree National Park area. Stay outside the fenced area to protect the mill site and mine when exploring near the mine.

For a longer hike, continue on the Lost Horse Loop, a 6.2-mile loop hike with 1292 ft of elevation gain. There is very little shade, so it is not recommended in the summer heat. Make sure to bring adequate food and water supplies and proper sun protection.
